The Battle of Chickamauga Information page.
  • The Battle of Chickamauga was a very slow one indeed. It wasn't really clear which side won, seeing as how there were no advantages from the start, but by the end, it became clearer that the Union had one the battle. From the beginning of the battle, the normal soldiers in the troops were the ones who made decisions and they had no specific battle lines and formations. This tells us that they weren't anywhere near close to ready for the battle. Neither side really wanted to fight this battle, and neither side really even knew where the enemy was. When they did find each other, they fought hand to hand with no weapons at all. This is probably because they ran out of ammunition.

  • During the night, on September 18, 1863, Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general, sent the Army of Tennessee to cross Chikamauga Creek. At the same time, Bushrod Johnson, another Confederate General, captured Reed's Bridge and made a path for Lafayette Road.

  • The Union, knowing that the Confederacy had captured Reed's Bridge, made it a goal to burn the bridge down. On their way, they ran into Bushrod Johnson and his men. General George Thomas of the Union ordered troops to attack the Confederate soldiers who had crossed the river. The Union troops ran straight into the rear of the Rebel's army at Jay's Mill in northwestern Georgia, which is where the fight took place. During the fight, because of the high density of trees, visibility was limited and less than the range of a rifle. Neither side could use the cannons they had except for when the fighting broke out of heavy force.

  • Veteran commander James Longstreet, a commander who arrived during the night, ordered John Bell Hood to cover his flank during an offensive strike in support of Hill's drive. Hood found himself in a small breach in the middle of the Union's army, created by the large amount of confusion of Union generals. As Rebel troops moved on, the Federal line slowly disintegrated on both sides. Caught by surprise by oncoming Confederates, Rosecrans, a Union general, and two senior officers shamefully fled from battle, leaving General Thomas by himself. Somehow, and it still remains a mystery to us all, the Union did win the battle. external image cwbattle.JPG
